how can I get shuffle to work on iPod Touch 6

When I am on the Now Playing screen, I cannot access the Shuffle or Repeat icons. Instead, they remain grayed out on the screen. Only the Share Music icon is accessible. I have tried both parallel bar icon and the "More" icon. These do present other choices, but not the one I want (the shuffle). What am I doing wrong?
